At least flowers are fairly benign in a way, like they cost money and then they die but it's harmless. The whole culture around diamonds is really effed up though.

Absolutely. We do almost an anti-valentine's celebration every year. You rarely ever see commercials or ads targeting women urging them to buy something for their significant other. Maybe I want diamonds, flowers, and frilly Victoria's Secret underwears.

The diamond thing is also ridiculous. We're just either making our own rings or having one of our blacksmith friends make us some bands. The ring is pretty much meaningless to us. The important bit is the relationship.
