Honestly if you get a cheap laptop and throw Lubuntu or Xubuntu on it, it'll run pretty quick. I've used Linux for years as I just don't game, and don't really care on missing out on small things. The performance difference is insane, and the learning curve for either of them is negligible.

this is my experience, they are faster/smoother than they used to be. I wouldn't use it as my main device personally, mostly because of the few things it can't do: (ahk, though it can on wine on some types), inquisit (bleh) and a couple of audio-video related issues with a couple hits it checked my os and wouldn't let me continue, but overall, decent for travelling/portability for the cost. (I may have said this the other day.)

How well does it work for just turking? are yo uable to run scripts and what not?

It runs okay enough. A little slow so you aren't going to be able to do infinite PANDAs or anything but should handle basic tasks fine.

I've used Linux for years

UbuntuMate on an old intel core 2 duo checking in here. I hope to upgrade my machines this fall but this works until then. Even with better hardware I don't think I will ever go back to windows for daily use.

I've always liked Lubuntu, for me it's always just worked the best on low hardware, never tried UbuntuMate, but if it's Gnome I probably wouldn't like it, I hate Gnome. I've tried so many distros though, a fun one is puppy linux, it's a USB bootable that I use, it's lightning quick, but kinda limited.

I installed linux on my Chromebook, but wasn't a big fan as the hardware compatibility wasn't great and a ton of stuff didn't work.
