@PeachyRider - If you (or anyone else) is a spreadsheet kind of person, I'd be happy to send you a link to the doc I made to keep track of my budget. I find that manually entering my expenses goes so far in helping me stay on track.

We also started tracking individual expenses through excel and it has helped us see where the money goes and how we might make adjustments--super not fancy, but effective.

have any tips?

the obvious answer is "don't touch your money" of course

but it can be tough stuff

First ... you need to determine your necessary monthly expenditures , then where does most of your discretionary money go each month What can you whittle down or eliminate all together?

Biggest savings for us (but we're a family) is with food. I make a meal plan and a shopping list and I don't deviate from it. Plan meals that are affordable and stretch like chicken roasters (roast chicken and then boil the carcass and make chicken soup), simple & tasty pasta dishes, rice dishes, etc.

I think @DorthyZbornak was spot on though ... pay yourself first. If you have difficulty saving, talk to your banker and see if they have an account that you can only deposit into and not withdraw for 'x' amount of time. Maybe open an investment account (where you are penalized for early withdrawal) and just start making small ($20/wk or mo) deposits.

I like Everydollar budgeting tool too.
I also discovered an app called Qapital. It rounds up any purchases you make and transfers it out into a different account.
