I recommend everyone try working in management at least once. Nothing has opened my eyes more, about how ridiculous and petty people can be, than working in retail management.
I second this. 20 years ago I was the receiving department manager at a Walmart and my employees were the whiniest, biggest back stabbers on the planet. Everyone was always angling for a promotion by sucking up to managers.

I was an Assistant Manger for a few years.
I used to help with those orientations.
Was about to say I'd eat my hat if you weren't an associate at some point, lol. My dad used to be a DM, and I got to go to work with him on rare occasion as a kid.
oh I see, I hear they get paid pretty well. Hope I can get promoted to something from cashiering, some time down the road. How do they promote, do they just say hey you are doing a really good job, do you want to be a ..... or do you have to fill out an application.
In my experience, and this is Home Depot, mind you, always make sure your supervisor and their supervisor knows you want to learn and grow at the company. I got moved from cashier to sales specialist in 6 months because I was persistent and learned everything I could. A couple years later, I made department manager. Just always be respectful and polite, and ask about opportunities for advancement any time you have a coaching/check-in session. The way it used to be, you did have to be on the lookout for and proactive about positions to apply to in your store, but (again, this was THD,) we used to have a board where anything open was posted by the timeclock. For us, we logged in with the same username/password we used before the company hired us and put in for open positions that way.

That explains all those questions in surveys about laughing at jokes you don't find funny or being nice to people for financial gain.

God, I hate, and I mean I HATE ass kissers. I have seen enough of those to last a lifetime, I even heard that one lady got to be manager in a unit at my day job because she slept her way to the top. Yikes. I have no room for those kind of people in my life.

Did retail management for *counts on her fingers* 6 years. That's enough for me, both of retail and of management. Don't really have that many horror stories though. More just the interesting (and sometimes problem) customers that always seemed to come bend my ear especially.

thanks, my ex manager worked at walmart part time in addition to her day job, and she started cashiering and got promoted to a CSS, in only 7 months. I'll have to ask her what I should do to get promoted. I don't think I would mind the cashiering part to much, it's the bagging of the groceries that i may not like so much. When I have to bag my own at Aldi, I'm so slow.

I completely agree. Especially with cashiers, many people in those positions have no desire at all to be anything other than cashiers. And with big companies like Walmart or Home Depot (I worked for both), they'll have no problem keeping people in those positions if those people don't speak up. But if you speak up, they can generally be very accommodating, since positions in those big stores are always opening up.

Luckily that's something that'll be muscle memory for you in no time at all! Just try to think about what you like or hate when someone bags your groceries for you, and draw your technique from that. Plus I'm pretty sure they still give you a guideline in training.
