I grew up in the rural South, so it wasn't so unusual there, but the world is changing. I had a young coworker recently who didn't know that you had to dial 1 before a long distance number on a land line. Further questioning revealed that she had no idea who Lynyrd Skynyrd is.
I do the same thing with my kid. He has daily chores he does for an allowance (he gets docked money if he doesn't do them), and weekend chores he does just because he lives there and doesn't get paid for those. But if he wants more money I have a huge list of chores and their value that he can do at any time to pad his income. That's what he did last weekend
