I do the same thing with my kid. He has daily chores he does for an allowance (he gets docked money if he doesn't do them), and weekend chores he does just because he lives there and doesn't get paid for those. But if he wants more money I have a huge list of chores and their value that he can do at any time to pad his income. That's what he did last weekend :)

I like the idea of virtual money...converting the spending money portion of his allowance (he has three banks and has to divide his earnings up between all three...savings, spending, and gifts). I'll run that by him. Basically all that ever happens is he decides he wants to buy something online so he gives me the cash and I use my credit card. I stash that cash in a bag, and give it back to him as allowance. I think I've given him the same dollar bills for about two years now.
Yeah, we learned really early on. I remember I was about...6, maybe 7, I wanted a doll SO! BADLY! and it was more than my allowance for 3 weeks. My parents refused to buy it for me, so I had to do extra chores to earn the money to get it. By the time that I did, I was so pleased with the amount of money that I had stashed up that I didn't want to spend it all on the doll anymore. We didn't have the fake checking account when I was that young, but we were taught right from the start about the value of money. I know exactly the difference between a "want" and a "need" now.

The downside to that is that any extra money I do get, I hoard it because I don't want to spend it. It takes a LOT for me to spend money on myself besides bills, and my bills are very, very few. I literally have shelter, electric, my internet (which is now a necessity), a pay as you go phone (not even a smartphone), and food for me and pets. Oh and my car insurance, too...and I bought the car before I ever "worked from home" so it's already paid off. I have no other bills. (Well, now I'm trying to help sis but that's a different story.) I get told all the time by people who know me that I "need" to "gift" myself something sometimes...so sometimes I spend a little over a dollar on Humble Bundle.

You can also make a little rip...uh...nevermind. Prolly shouldn't teach people how to float a check, lol...
Yeah, don't give away everything.

I'm the same way - my friends all jokingly call me Clark Howard. I don't mind :p

Ya can't take it with ya when you go! You deserve more than a dollar treat!!! (I totally understand wanting to help the sister, too).

I hope my kid grows up as responsible with money as you are. I'm trying to instill that value. He had a massive meltdown this weekend when I refused to allow a purchase until he paid down some debt, but then he sucked it up and did extra chores. I must say, he did a whole bunch with zero complaints. I was quite impressed.

This made me feel guilty. All I've eaten today is half a bag of Popchips and half a dark chocolate bar. I need some nutrients.
