I don't find them very comfortable. I wore them for awhile when I was working in the prison. (It was, strangely enough, one of the 'acceptable' shoes). I found them slightly uncomfortable - and certainly never my first choice. But, they are waterproof and I appreciated that.
For around the house, I used to have a pair of LLBean Wicked Good slippers (also expensive). But they were comfortable. My favorite shoes remain clogs, though, when I'm out and about (real wood clogs).

You're probably correct, at least about the second item. My Dad was a [very good] Army officer (an AG). Wasn't 'stern,' as is typically thought officers are. If he'd had a college education he would undoubtedly have made general.

and now that I think about it, crocs don't offer much traction if you are walking your 80 pound black lab in the early morning, before the sun rises, and you are on dewy grass - about to go inside - when the dog spots an animal in the backyard.

OTOH, it is true that if you suddenly find yourself parallel to the ground, you do sort of hang, mid-air, for just a moment
before you fall face first into the grass.
