My dog hates other dogs and other people. Seriously, she's a fighter. She likes me, that's just her thing, but she fights with almpst every other dog she meets. I did have a roommate some years ago who had cats and my dog loved those damn cats. She would spend hours grooming them and taking care of them. They ate her dog food, and she would just sit there and observe while they tried to crunch up her big kibble nuggets in their little mouths. She didn't mind. My roomie had the kitties on a diet at the time. Many of these cats were feral and would run for cover when a human approached. Roommie was a vegan and an animal activist, so that's just how we lived

I'm thinking of getting a cat for my dog, but does anyone have suggestions as to how I can help my dog be gentle with other dogs?

I'd have to agree with @Blue. I rescued a pup who was totally afraid of everything, and would be aggressive as a result.

Lots and LOTs of socialization. she's improved tremendously in the past year. and I know it sounds cheesy and cesar milany but really going into it with the right frame of mind helps a ton. My pup was afraid of men but I didn't see drastic improvement until I stopped warning people that she may nip. Now she loves all people and tolerates other dogs.

I think the most effective method I've found is just lots and lots of supervised socialization with strange dogs and people.

Seriously, we've done that. There were two dogs that she was able to play with in her aggressive way up until recently. One has moved away (he just packed up and moved if you can believe that), and she literally attacked the second one last week. She's extremely aggressive with other dogs, while still being extremely passive with her humans (or cats). Her idea of playing is to run as hard and fast as she can at the other dog. If the other dog doesn't like that then she's sort of like fuck you. At the first sign of hair on the back going up, or a small warning growl, she goes into attack mode.

There's none here.

Oddly enough, snacks is not something I typically buy. Like right now, with this sudden Sour candy phase? I just go out and buy just enough but I don't keep it stocked. Like I don't even buy soda really, but it's rather something I enjoy outside the house. I hardly buy fruit juice either. It's like I enjoy those kinds of things outside the house. Every now and then I'll buy a pint of ice cream or something.
