I honestly don't feel like going through the last week of June's threads to find this. I just went through the 8 pages of Rerun's posts via his profile, but it cuts off at the beginning of July. And there was previous conversation in PMs, but the post was an obvious compliment.

(For the record, I am not holding a grudge. I'm just pointing to the post that Peachy @PeachyRider was trying to find.)
Now the guy doesn't even want to log in much here. Not just because of that one post, but because of the entire nature of the forums nowadays
When I first came to this forum, the first week it was open, the vibe here was a very welcoming one. Admins were happy I came over from MTG, and there was a general sense of togetherness.

In the last few months, I have seen mods complaining about being mods, admins telling forum members to stop being snarky (while at the same time being snarky themselves), and a general sense of forum members being more of a BURDEN than anything else. The "if you can't play nice with the tags, then we'll take them away" mentality just drove that wedge even further.

I have been told that my style of posting was turning off new forum members. I have asked the mods to *clarify* the posting rules for me, but haven't gotten an answer. I did get a, "don't make a big deal about it" reply. Another mod even pointed me to the existing forum guidelines, but I noticed that those are only arbitrarily enforced, as many posters are given more leeway than others. I even went so far as to ask an admin to make a rule JUST for me - a guideline for me to follow. Again, my request was ignored.

It got to the point that every time I posted, I had to second guess myself before sending. "Is this post going to offend one of the mods?" That's the problem... I have to GUESS. When I have to reword everything I'm saying and sanitize it down so that it means absolutely nothing anymore, then what's the point?

I come here to make money. I donated to the forum because I believed in it. However, when the internal politics of the forum become so much of a distraction that I start to LOSE money, then maybe it's time for me to stop visiting. I certainly don't think I've been missed around here in the past week. Like I said, I get the general sense that I am more of a burden than an asset.

What's the answer, Rerun @Rerun? I don't have one. I can only tell you why I personally just don't feel like coming here as much anymore. That sense of dread every time I logged in each morning, worried about how to CAREFULLY craft my posts so that I can get my points across without disrupting the delicate fabric of the work thread. I know the mods don't have it easy. But we're all on the same team here. I don't have the answer... I can only do what's best for myself now.

I do wish the mods the VERY best of luck, though, and I hope that a happy medium can be found once again!

I'm not very good with words but you were actually missed. I don't know exactly what happened as I am not very active or popular here, but just keep being yourself.
Mods and admins: please let people like Rerun post in peace, don't moderate them so much, come on.

Thanks, tempo @tempo. Seriously... wow.

Let me stress that the mods did not overmoderate me.

My discomfort here stems from the fear of being reprimanded (or worse, banned). I was basically told a few times to chill out, but no specifics were given to me, even when I asked. I try to be a respectful guy, and although there are forum members that don't like me, I do try to be a pleasant and encouraging member of this community. However, the lack of clarification led me to wonder what I had done wrong and how I could prevent myself from breaking the rules again. This general sense of fear made things more uncomfortable for me, and every time I posted, I felt like I had to be overly diplomatic in everything I said.

To make matters worse, I would see other posters exhibiting similar (or worse) behavior than my own, leading me to wonder if I was being singled out. This growing paranoia became a distraction from turking - y'know, the actual reason we're all here.

I know the mods have a tough time trying to distinguish sarcasm from actual hate. What they do is a thankless job, and I'm not here to throw any of them under the bus, despite how it looks. Once upon a time, we were all in this together. Somewhere along the way, it became a division of us and them. I don't know what the solution is. I can only share with you things from my perspective.

I can't speak to your other points, they don't involve me nor am I in a position to offer a solution to them.

These points I can take issue with. I don't know when this mentality started, or why, but it makes absolutely no sense to me, as an outside observer. There is no us vs. them situation. The admin staff does everything they can to allow people leeway, give people chances, and try to spell things out in relatively clear terms, which, in a fluid situation like this, is all you can do. They offer help just the same as other posters, advice and guidance, direction to proper threads and resources. Posters have stepped over the line, been reprimanded, and gone back to posting without issue. And for it, the staff gets a lot of backhanded, snarky comments (and I would imagine a fair share of PMs) that oh-so coyly prod at the rules that are trying to be enforced, and in many situations, the people enforcing them. We are all in this together, and we all do want to make this work. That takes effort from both posters and administrative staff, which I think has been quite evident and productively conversed about in this thread so far.

The "if you can't play nice with the tags, then we'll take them away" mentality just drove that wedge even further.
The tags were borderline abusive, and at the very least in extremely poor taste. Equating this with a children's toy analogy is downplaying exactly how absurd some of that was getting, but perhaps accurate to the mindset of those using them. Removing a completely gratuitous feature from the forum is hardly what I would call "driving a wedge".

Thanks for finding it. According to my recollection, this was after a day when the mods were specifically asked to intervene between a few individuals who felt they were being attacked or teased. This happened in PM between mods and the individuals involved so I don't feel comfortable going into specifics, but my comment there was in direct response to that situation. I understand to someone not involved in that that it looks like I'm telling someone to stop with compliments, but there was a lot of back history to this in PM and with interpersonal conflict with a few members.

I have been told that my style of posting was turning off new forum members. I have asked the mods to *clarify* the posting rules for me, but haven't gotten an answer. I don't know what this was about, but if you're not getting a specific response via PM, please post in this thread. Then everyone can see the question and all mods (and members) can see it, too, and hopefully collaboratively contribute to answering the question and providing the clarification you need.

I know the mods have a tough time trying to distinguish sarcasm from actual hate
This is, by far, the most difficult part of being a mod here. It is literally impossible to keep track of who is friends with who and at what type of friendship "level" or style, so when we see one member making a jab at another, we often have no idea if it's because they're good friends or if there's an actual issue. Plus sarcasm is hard online. And then it's even harder because we're trying to turk at the same time and often have to make these moderation judgments pretty quickly. So we get it wrong sometimes. I would ask that when we do inevitably get it wrong sometimes, we're treated respectfully and someone lets us know that rather than throwing around claims like the mods are being tyrannical or dictators.

Regarding the tags, our forum software doesn't allow us to see who posts the tags, so we couldn't directly talk to the person who was posting problematic tags or ban that one person or anything. It was happening over a period of weeks where it was gradually getting worse. We would delete the offensive ones and mention it in the thread, and then someone (or someones) would add the tags back or add even worse ones and then it would all happen again day after day. Personally, I was spending a lot of time re-deleting offensive tags that people kept adding over and over, even after we'd asked that the tags not be abused. Lacking any other options, we removed the ability to add tags. We gave everyone plenty of opportunity to stop abusing the tags but since someone (or someones) continued ruining it for everyone, we decided to disable that feature.

The problem with this part is, Me, (toby, yay) Peach and Rerun were sent a pm by one mod that day asking us to chill out. We all three discussed it with the mod. it wasnt you that we talked too. We all three thought we had cleared the problem up. Then you posted that after the conversation was over. In which I brought it up to the other mod and they said they would talk to you about it. So that part doesnt line up.. It may be a big giant mis communication. But he was publicly shamed, after agreeing to tone down the teasing. We did what we were asked and it still wasnt good enough. That's his point.

This sounds like a giant miscommunication because I was not part of the original PM conversation. It seems like it ended up like a game of telephone where one person says something and then it's passed down through a series of people and the end result isn't quite the same as the original intent. I certainly wasn't attempting to be malicious here, and I don't think anyone else was either in communicating the information. In the future, I think it would be helpful for anyone (not just you, but anyone) who has a concern and wants to bring something up to the mods to be sure to include all the mods in the PM so we can all have the same information from the direct source. That could help cut down on miscommunication between everyone.

I dont think you were being malicious either. It is a miscommunication. I'm just giving you his point. That night really sucked. We were all very nice and agreed to cut it down. Then that happened right after. (but also, for a few days after, other specific people get mean and snarky,) then we felt singled out. But, that hands in the face emoji. I dont think it wouldve been that bad if that wasnt posted. Just giving the other point of view.

We havent teased like that since. nor did we plan on it . We love this place. We want to be apart of the community. Hopefully that clears up some of the other side. We all need to work together. Nobody wants to be mean. Sometimes tempers get flared, and I think that's human nature. But we do respect the place. Nobody is shitting on you guys. I wouldnt wanna deal with the job you do at all. It's tireless and for little to no reward.

I'm sorry that night really sucked and that the miscommunication happened. As I said above, when mods make mistakes, it would be helpful if you (you meaning whoever is involved) would shoot us a PM to let us know that. I had no idea I had misunderstood or that there was a miscommunication there until right now, today, in this thread. I can't fix or apologize or repair a miscommunication if I'm not made aware of it. So I think better communication all around, from both mods and members, can help improve the overall atmosphere.

The problem for me is not that one isolated post mentioned earlier. As I said before, it's a lack of structure. Like StarfoxJ @StarfoxJ pointed out, after we were reprimanded for too much snark, we saw others posting equally snarky posts - some directed at us. The three of us (myself, StarfoxJ @StarfoxJ, and Peachy @PeachyRider) can take good-natured ribbing, and we can give it back in return. It's all in fun and is just a simple attempt to lighten the mood here. However, with that taken away from us, we just had to sit there and take our lumps.

I didn't know what I specifically did, or what I was doing, to catch the attention of the mods. I just know that some posters were allowed to get away with things and others were told to knock it off. Without knowing what I could and couldn't post, I felt a general sense of fear. FEAR! For the first two weeks of July, I found myself worried each and every time I posted. So I stopped coming here. I wasn't trying to make a statement, and I wasn't looking for attention. This forum functions just fine without me - I am just one small cog that doesn't make a difference.

As far as communication goes, I actually invited electrolyte @electrolyte to PM me if she had a problem with my posts, to avoid any public disrespect from either side. No such PM came to me, though. I have done my best to be a good member of this forum: I donated, I "liked" a tremendous amount of posts, I promoted forum games, I welcomed newbies, and I tried to make people feel good about their earnings. And yet I'm still made to feel like I'M the burden here. Miscommunication? Maybe. But fear-mongering is definitely not the ideal way to run a community. I would rather leave on my own terms than to be banned for something I never understood.

I have tremendous respect for what the mods and admins do here. It truly IS a thankless job. And none of them can say that I ever truly disrespected them. But when my posts are being watched more closely while others' posts are generally excused, I have no recourse. So yes, maybe it IS a lack of communication, and I DID try to reach out to find out what I can do, until finally I just gave up. Respect is a two-way street.

I understand mods are human, too. Mistakes are made. No one knows about mistakes more than I do. But I still own up to mine, and if I have wronged someone, I am quick to apologize and smooth things over. I don't see that coming from anyone, though. Still, to this day, I have not received a PM from any mod saying, "THIS is why you're not allowed to get away with things that many others are." And I don't expect to. So I am tired of having my hands tied. I am posting this because this subject was brought to my attention, and I wanted to make sure that my feedback was received.

Rerun @Rerun, I apologize for failing to be clear in my communications/PMs with you. On my end I felt I was being as clear as possible. I try very hard to be fair and unbiased towards all members to ensure members aren't given preferential treatment because of friendships that exist.

Maybe I am the one with the issue and I'm not seeing things from everyone else's perspective as well as I thought I had been.

I've only been on here for a few months at most, and on mturk for slightly longer, but I genuinely respect the work the mods are doing, while also recognizing that it is a challenge to accommodate the many different possibly somewhat off-kilter personalities of those who are seriously into mturk. I really appreciate this forum. I have no idea how long I'll be into turking, but the forum helps, and I appreciate both the mods and everyone who contributes, no matter how much affinity I might feel for them were I to meet them "in real life". Right now, this is IRL. I hope the mods can strive the appreciate the users and the users can strive to appreciate the mods, no matter our differences.

To begin, I've been apprehensive on discussing this in this thread, because I prefer to keep everyone's privacy intact. But, considering this has continued to be rehashed in this thread with such vigor and animosity, I feel it's important to be transparent with everyone.

In June(via private PM) you asked that moderators step in and curtail the sarcastic comments because you felt it was not good natured and people were being vicious towards you. There are reported posts and private PMs documenting this. From that point on the moderators of this forum operated in the manner of knowing these comments were NOT light hearted ribbing.

When I sent out PMs to all of you, it was because I and other mods started noticing the same type of posts happening that were complained about just two weeks prior. I was attempting to do my due diligence as an admin of this forum.

Upon sending the PMs, you stated that everything had been worked out, and it in fact was good natured, this time. This had never been relayed to any staff member. I'm not sure how you expected the staff to know that you had worked out your issues privately. I feel we (the staff) acted appropriately with the information we had been given.

My mistake here was not including the rest of the staff in the PMs, but all information was relayed to everyone in a timely manner. From now on, any correspondence I have with members regarding complaints of the forum or other members, will be in group messages with all staff included. I do not want anything left up to 'miscommunication'.

I do not feel we've let certain members get away with being snarky while letting others slide. There were a few members who were rather rude recently on several occasions and they have been dealt with appropriately by permanent bans.

I also feel I've done my best at explaining myself and being clear to all of you via PM. I try to make sure I'm looking at everyone else's perspective.

Lastly, if there's any areas you feel I can improve upon as an Administrator of this forum, please let me know. I am always open and willing to discuss differing opinions and constructive criticisms.

When I got the PM from you that night, I was pretty suprised there had even been an issue since I thought it was all in good fun between the three of us. If people had been complaining about us the weeks prior, then alright. I saw worse banter among other members than what we were doing, but reported posts are reported posts.

One of my points the other day was Electrolyte saying "that's enough" after an obvious compliment was kind of silly. Mis-communication or no mis-communication. Even if she wasn't included in any PMs. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Rerun's post. PMs or no PMs, back story or no back story. It's not important anymore. And I'm glad everyone involved has expressed their views and thoughts on it.

I've still seen some of the things I've complained about last week - the last few days on the boards... but not as bad as it had been previously. Maybe things are improving. I even took all of my wrestling discussion to the wrestling thread last night. So I'm trying to be more considerate myself.

Post by Toby: Nate doesn't like me
Post by Rerun: Nate and I have lots in common. (small text disclaimer/compliment)

That's what seems like the "Let's Not" is going to. Not the small text disclaimer. I'm sure anyone can see why there would need to be a "let's not" when there had just been a complaint. Even with the compliment at the end. As far as we knew there was still a problem and Rerun's post could be taken (in that light) not as a compliment but instead a passive aggressive way to get around the request that y'all tone it down.

I realize y'all are saying now that there was no problem and that was a genuine compliment and some lighthearted ribbing but that's not the information we, as the admins, had at the time. I hope this has helped to clear some of this up.

You saw me and rerun joke at each other constantly in the never ending thread and you would join in sometimes. till he left it. You could see there was no problem.

The complaint came after the chat thread. I'm going by most recent information. Friendships can change and what may have been funny and in good fun before may not have been now. That's why nothing was done for months with y'alls playing because we knew it was playing.

I want to reiterate that I understand that's not the case now, but that's not the understanding that day for that post.

Edit - also what Jaded @Jaded said.

What were getting at here is we were acting (in good faith, not maliciously) upon the information we had been given via members, not us (the staff) making our own assumptions.

It can be very difficult and ambiguous for us to differentiate what is in good nature or not, especially when there's been prior complaints regarding the same members.

What we're running into is:

If we don't say something, we're allowing certain members to get preferential treatment.
If we do say something, we're allowing certain members to get preferential treatment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I think going forward we all need to work on being more communicative, being polite to others in general, and reporting posts when there is an actual issue. Our job is not to police the forum, but to help create a positive atmosphere where we can all work together and contribute. I certainly do not want to spend my time policing members and settling arguments when we're all adults here and capable of acting in an appropriate and responsible manner.

What I dont understand is, 99 percent of me and reruns stuff was contained to the never ending thread. You really have to pick and choose to complain about something in the work thread. Whoever did. and the stuff in the work thread was very obviously tame and very rarely carried over. cause rerun never wanted to cloud up the work thread with it. now me and peach. absolutely. I can see where people would complain. we were awful to each other at times and mean. but me and rerun. somebody had a childish grudge.
