roughly how much is state income tax in comparison to federal income tax though? I didn't think what state someone lives in makes much difference as far as income tax? I hadn't thought about it before though.

Yes, but you can be a landlord in Texas and believe me the State of Texas will defend landords (a landlord friendly state). So great place to invest into real estate. Buy a house, rent it out and make a profit, then rinse and repeat for infinite money.
